150 years of Swami Vivekananda
150 years of Swami Vivekananda

12th. Of Jan (Sat), was the 150th Birth anniversary of one of the greatest spiritual leaders that India[Bharatha bhumi] has ever produced, he is none other than Swami vivekananda. He was praised and adored across the world as a 'warrior monk' of India who  hailed the ultimate knowledge proposed by the vedanta that the country stands for.
Swami also voiced and enlightened the people of the west, what a high-held position the people of the Bharatha occupy when it comes to spirituality. He emphatically reinstated that Bharatha has always stood and shall stand tall as the 'Viswa guru'[The ultimate spiritual teacher] of the world though never as a 'Viswa Vijetha' [The material conquerer of the world]
Swami Vivekananda was born as Narendra Nath Datta, in a traditional Bengali family to Sri Viswanath Datta and Smt.Bhuvanesari Devi. He spent his early days of youth as a young brilliant boy active in sports and organisation activities, while being an ardent student of the Hindu scriptures with potential genius and prodigious memory.
In his quest for knowledge of God, he happened to meet Sri Ramakrishna, who is popularly known as Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa on whose name Swami Vivekananda would later start a mission - the Ramakrishna Mission or the Ramakrishna mutt or the Ramakrishna order, as it is popularly known as.
Narendranath's [young Swami Vivekananda] meeting with Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and his words that, he had seen God like he was seeing the young Narendra, moved him and had a deep impact on his inquisitive mind. He later became an ardent and a deserving disciple of Sri Ramakrishna under whose guidance and mastership he would experience the "Nirvikalpa samadhi". The mastership and the Shisyarika is often referred to as a modern day example of what our scriptures talk about the sacred "Guru <=> Sishya" relationship by which means a young mischievous boy would turn out to be an affluent spiritual leader!!
Swami Vivekananda believed that the essence of Hinduism was best expressed in the Vedanta philosophy, based on the interpretation of Jagadru Sri Adi Shankaracharya Bhagavatpada, and is the ideal way to awaken the people of a country which lost its 'individuality'.
After Sri Ramakrishna shook off his mortal coils, Swami Vivekananda traveled through the length and breadth of India as a wandering monk. He deeply meditated on a rock at the tip of India, at Kanyakumari, which would later become the "Vivekananda Rock Memorial", on the eternal problems Mother India was facing, it's strengths and the lacking of it that was responsible for its owes. On the guidance of his Guru and the Goddess Kali, he started his mission of awakening India and later decided to go to the West and preach unto the mankind the real treasure of knowledge that Mother India holds in it.
He later started the Ramakrishna mission order and attained Mahasamadhi on 4th.July.1902
Here is an occasion to take a deep breath, reminisce and cherish the achievements of Swami Vivekananda and get inspired and motivated by some of the gems said by the master. Here is a glimpse of those:
- “The earth is enjoyed by heroes”—this is the unfailing truth. Be a hero. Always say, “I have no fear.”
- "All power is within you. You can do anything and everything. Believe in that. Be bold, be strong. Do not believe that you are weak;Stand up and express the divinity within you"
- "Fear is death, fear is sin, fear is hell, fear is unrighteousness, fear is wrong life. All the negative thoughts and ideas that are in the world have proceeded from this evil spirit of fear."
- "Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, that is way great spiritual giants are produced. Others are mere talking machines"
- "Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man."
- "My ideal, indeed, can be put into a few words, and that is: to preach unto mankind their divinity, and how to make it manifest in every movement of life."
- "You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself."
- "Give me few men and women who are pure and selfless and I shall shake the world !"
- "Strength is life, Weakness is death!"
Personally, I have had a deep impression of the very personality of Swami Vivekananda and his electrifying speeches that always keep you mentally fit !
The summary or the quotes of his speeches, which are in fact a dynamic representation of the very essence of our Vedas, and Upanishads have to be written up on the classroom walls of every school. This way we can ensure that the inferiority of heart and mind ['Hridaya Dourbalya' as is mentioned by Gitacharya in Bhagavadgita] that is inculcated at a very tender age can be driven off and a stronger India can be dreamt of in reality !!

notes from hari :
I first came across Swami Vivekananda
around the age of twelve,
when my uncle presented me with his personal copy of
"Selections from Swami Vivekanada".

The memory I have of those days is that being full
of positive energy every time I read from it.
If I had to get pepped up anytime, all I had to do
is randomly open a page and read from that book.

That is how he inspired me. Did he inspire you ?
Would you like to write a few lines about it ?
